Purple Passionfruit aka "possum purple" passionfruit is one of our favorite fruits to grow here in the tropics. These large fast growing beautiful vines flower in the spring and fruit throughout the summer. The flowers are some of the most showy flowers you've ever seen, and their resemblance to the Passion of Christs thorny crown is how the plant got its name. These incredibly productive vines will be covered in flowers if happy, sometimes producing one flower (and then one fruit) at every leaf node! The fruit turns purple and drops from the vine when ripe, after which you can cut it in two and slurp out the delicious tart pulp. Enjoy your passionfruit right out of the shell like a little shot of seed-laden pudding or use it to make cocktails, deserts & more.

The leaves, stems & flowers of the passionfruit vine are used medicinally to treat anxiety, insomnia & blood pressure issues. Use the flowers & leaves in a calming tea to help with sleep before bed, as it has a mild sedative effect. Grow yourself a passionfruit vine and you'll have a crazy abundance of leaf material, as one plant can take over about 60 feet of chainlink fence in one season.

"The passion flower is known to contain the antioxidant compound vitexin as well as fatty acids and phytosterols. The combination of these compounds with quercetin aid the body in promoting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. By reducing cortisol levels through the reduction of stress and anxiety levels, passion flower can positively influence an individual's response to stress as well as help to reduce the body's tendency to accumulate fat". according to this website.

Planting and growing tips: passionfruit seeds can take 3-4 weeks to germinate so we recommend planting them in well draining potting mix in shade and making sure the seedling trays don't get waterlogged (which can happen easily with slow germinating seeds) otherwise you risk having your seeds rot. The first 12 leaves of passionfruit vines aren't deeply lobed so they may not look familiar, however once the plant starts establishing itself it will produce mature recognizable leaves. Plant passionfruit vine in full sun with well draining soil, as they are susceptible to root and stem rot even as mature plants. One passionfruit plant can cover 40 feet of trellising so make smart decisions about spacing and trellising when planting this aggressive and beautiful vine.

All seeds were harvested from our organic urban farm and plant nursery in 2020. Seed packages are hand silkscreened by Gold Teeth Brooklyn, a handmade stationery company based in Los Angeles.

Seeds have been tested for reliable germination in our nursery at 80 degree daytime temperatures. We recommend using them within 1 year of date of purchase.

Please note: because we are a working farm we only ship seed orders once weekly so please be patient with your package. If you need a rush shipment please email us and we will do our best to accommodate.

Materials

All of our plants are produced using OMRI certified organic materials (potting mix, fertilizer & pesticides) however our nursery is not certified organic. Plants are shipped in compostable peat moss pots and we use heirloom & organic seeds whenever possible.

Shipping & Returns

We ship plant orders every Monday. Due to the nature of shipping plants we only offer expedited shipping for our live plant orders. Our returns & exchanges policy is also quite strict since its hard to control the quality of a plant once it leaves our facility, however we do our very best to make sure that each and every customer is satisfied with their plants. Read more about our policies here.

Size

All of our plants are potted in 4" pots and their foliage size varies based on how large the plant is naturally when its root ball is the correct size for the pot. If a plant is too tall for our shipping box we may prune it to fit (bonus: many plants do better after being pruned since they make bushier growth). We do our very best to ship all of our plants in the "sweet spot" of maturity however so long as the roots have colonized the pot we will consider a plant mature enough to ship.

Care Instructions

When you receive your plant its critical to get it out of its box and into the light the day it arrives. It will also want to be removed from its compostable plastic wrapping and given fresh water to drink. Keep in mind, this plant was grown in the tropical humid climate of South Florida, so if it's terribly cold or dry where you are it'll need to be hardened off before planting outdoors. Visit our care instructions page for more thorough info about caring for your new plant friend.
